Congress Proposes Increase for Biomedical Research

The House and Senate have agreed on a 2008 spending package for Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS), which includes the budget for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Cancer Institute (NCI).

The good news is the House and Senate have agreed to an increase of 3.1% above the 2007 budget for NIH and to a 2.67% budget increase for NCI.  The bad news is that President Bush has threatened to veto the bill because of an objection to the overall funding level.

Only strong, bipartisan support in the House and Senate will protect this legislation from veto and ensure that the proposed increase in NIH and NCI funding remains intact.
